Reload: New Chapter of ‘Live the List’ Begins

Life List III: 55 Things in 555 Days

Over the next 555 days, I WILL complete the following 55 items. It started on Aug. 29, 2013 and will expire March 7, 2015.

* carry-over items from my previous 55/555 list.

**  items that I STILL haven’t accomplished from my original 101 List. #fail

+ tasks that have marked off a previous list but I want to experience again

There is something inspiring about making or building something with your hands/mind/talents.

1. Write a book with my buddy Nick Eatman

Nick and I want to attend seven sporting events in 7 days, writing about the experience along the way. This 7-day adventure is a test, because we have a grand vision: 365 straight days of sports.

 2. Do a “crowd sourced” marketing campaign

Ideas: Make EVERY sports broadcasts show the Star Spangled Banner or challenge restaurants
to give big cups for water and small cups for soda.

3. Build a tree house

4. Create one piece of art (sculpture, painting, etc.)

5. Start an internet radio show

I actually started a REAL radio show. The Live the List Radio Show is  live on 95.3 KOME every Sunday night from 7 to 9 p.m. (Stream online at

This category has always spoken for itself – it revolves around getting my butt in shape.

6. Buy a SUP board

I purchased a used board in summer of 2016; I was introduced to stand up paddle boarding in May 2013 when working on a marketing campaign in historically hip Bastrop, TX

7. Be able to do 10 pull-ups in a row

Click here to see video evidence

On Nov. 4, 2013, I broke the 1,000-day barrier…the next day, I laced ’em up again. (blog post)

9. Take a martial arts class**

This has been on my Life List for more than 1,500 days (that’s FOUR YEARS)! #tragic

10. Break 4-hr mark in marathon**

My Facebook message after running The Army Marathon in Killeen on March 2, 2014:  Here are the highlights: Wind chill dropped to 22 degrees, there was light drizzle throughout, winds whipped up to 20 MPH (including last 3/4 mile in my face). It was a bad day to run…SO, I decided to go ahead and wreck it. I finished 3:57.46 (in my last marathon ever).

11. Get a physical

According to my doctor…I’m PERFECT. (blog post)

A few simple pleasures that I want to experience over the next 555 days

Crawfish12. Smoke a Cuban cigar

16. Ride on a motorcycle**

This was on my Life List for more than 1,500 days (that’s FOUR YEARS)! #just_do_it

This was on my original 101 list – my mountain man look was a huge conversation piece at all my business meetings. (blog post)

18. Read a book on a tablet

In order to accomplish this task, I had to get a tablet. Done and done. I read a wonderfully great book by Andy Andrews, The Noticer Returns.

19. Go to the horse races

I went to Lone Star Park with my brother-in-law, Scott, and The Boy on July 12, 2014.

20. Get a straight-razor shave+

I received my first old-fashioned shave in May 2013 (Indulge: The Slow Road to a Clean Shave)…I enjoyed it SO much, I received another one on November 21, 2013.

A handful of tasks that I want to accomplish once we move outside the city limits.

I can thank “Naked and Afraid” for this task making the list.

DEFINING AN ADVENTURE (includes travel)

Blog excerpt: “When you aren’t 100 percent sure what’s coming around the next corner, whether that’s on the side of a mountain or walking down a strange street, you are in the midst of an adventure.”

25. Ride in hot air balloon**

Blog excerpt: As soon as the basket lifts off the ground, adrenaline rushes to your brain and your breathing pattern immediately changes. All of your senses know that you’re in the midst of a once-in-a-lifetime adventure. (read entire post here)

Live the List Project26. Sky Dive**

This was on my Life List for more than 2,000 days (that’s almost FIVE AND HALF YEARS)! I finally realized that I was scared, BUT on March 7, 2014 – they day this life list expired – I flung myself out of an airplane and marked it off.

27. Go to Jackson Hole, Wyoming

28. Summit a Fourteener**

29. Go on a cruise**

This was on my Life List for more than 1,500 days (that’s FOUR YEARS)! #markitoff

30. Go to Grand Canyon

Finally marked this off in May 2016. I actually ran the Grand Canyon Half Marathon to do it in style.

31. Go on a vacation without kids #nokidvacay

Project goal: A gigantic thank you note to God and a road map to truly live an adventurous and amazing life.

 32. Help 100 people mark something off their list (22/100)

33. Inspire my wife to make a 55/555 list

She can’t put her hands on her list – it’s buried under life – but it did positively impact her life (blog post).

34. Host “Live the List” weekend at BHR

I did a test run of this crazy idea with some family and friends in 2013. I really think it has the potential to be wonderfully great.

Things that absolutely scare the hell out of me.

35. Get another dog

In April 2016, we welcomed Cpt. Woodrow Call to our family.

36. Buy Ily an outfit

Tasks I want to accomplish with my kids. Crash will be 5 years old when this list expires – Ily will be 2. That’s why there a lot more things I want to do with The Boy.

38. Take Crash to the circus

March 13, 2015 – The Kelly Miller Circus in Glen Rose, Texas.

39. Take Ily to a Rangers game

When I put this on my life list, I NEVER dreamt that I’d cross it off so quickly. Ily Belle experienced her first game on Sept. 25, 2013, at the age of 2 months old. BTW: She LOVED IT!

40. Take Crash canoeing

41. Teach Crash to ride a bike

Live the List42. Take Crash skiing

This has been one of the most wonderfully great tasks that I’ve EVER marked off a list list.

I went for quality instead of quantity in this category.

45. Disciple someone+

This is a catch-all category for some really cool things that I want to experience over the next 555 days.

46. Win a contest*

47. Pay cash for a new truck

48. Go to a championship game

My Facebook message on March 1, 2014: In the most random of circumstances I got to mark No. 48 off my life list (Attend a championship game). I not only attended the championship game of the Glen Rose baseball tournament…I announced it!

49. Complete Rosetta Stone (Spanish)Wade Bowen

50. Meet Wade Bowen

I asked him what was on his bucket list. He said, “Meet Bruce Springsteen.”

51. Go to a film festival

52. Actively participate in Random Act of Kindness Week

I kicked off Random Act of Kindness Week by saying a short prayer: “Heavenly Father…I don’t mean to be an idiot, but I need you to open my heart and educate me about kindness. Show me how you want to use me this week.” Mission. Accomplished. (blog post)

53. Watch every episode of The Sopranos

54. Tour AT&T Stadium, home of the Dallas Cowboys

Went to Jerry World with my buddy Chris and his wife, Edie, on Sept. 17, 2013. Reminded me of the importance of including other people in this “Live the List” adventure. Like Chris McCandless said as he was dying alone in the Alaskan wilderness: “…unshared happiness is not happiness.”

55. Create scholarship at my alma mater, Midwestern State University

Drew, your list looks great! Very insiring! There is nothing that I could first hand help with, however, if you want to grow a beard out for a month (and be able to explain it at business meetings), November would be a great month! You could participate in Movember, and encourage your friends and family to do so with you. No one can judge facial hair when it’s growing for a good cause 🙂
Here’s some info about it, if you aren’t familiar:

Good luck with the list! I’m excited to hear more about your book also!

Deal! I’ll let you know when I finish my list. I started it right away. My list will be along a different theme than yours. I’ll explain more when I get it completed. But, I wanted to share the first thing I put on my list: I’m going to place a Love Lock somewhere in memory of my husband.
Looking forward to sharing my list and my story.

Reminder: No rules to life lists! I can’t wait to see yours.
